What to Expect in your Veg Box this Winter

What to Expect in your Veg Box this Winter

We are making a comeback after the recent weather events, focusing on restoring some of our vegetable beds that sadly lost significant topsoil in the giant downpours. Although the heavy rain was frustrating, many of the staff and volunteers enjoy working in the cool, fresh conditions. Harvesting is certainly less stressful for both staff and produce!

Read on to find out what to expect in your veg box this season.

Flowering Veg: Brassicas are the stars of winter, and we have lots of broccoli, broccolini, cauliflower, red and green cabbage in the ground. We have some sugar snap and snow peas maturing right now, plus a planting of broadbeans planned. Pumpkin will also continue to feature, sourced from other organic farms.

Leafy Greens: Silverbeet, rainbow chard, lettuce and kale (curly leaf and Tuscan) will continue to be veg box staples. We will also be growing bok choy, joi choi, English spinach and fennel, along with rocket, radicchio, mizuna and red elk for some extra variety.

Root Veg & Alliums: Carrot, beetroot (red and golden), leek and spring onion remain favourites here at the GC farm. We also have kohlrabi, turnip, parsnip, radish and swede plantings coming this season. Of course, we’ll keep sourcing organic potatoes to complement your winter meals, with either brown or red onion and occasionally some sweet potato too.

Herbs: We’ll continue to grow herbs around the farm to supplement veg boxes. Coriander and parsley thrive in the cool weather! We’ll also include the occasional dill, rosemary, water celery and bay leaf.

Fruit:  Because we purchase most of our fruit from other suppliers, you will continue to receive a range of quality certified organic fruit, including apples, bananas, oranges, mandarins, pears, and kiwifruit. We will complement this selection with farm-grown citrus, including some beautiful lemons.

Veg Box Customers: See anything you’d prefer not to get? Weekly packing lists are available in your customer account. Exclude up to 3 items from each box by updating the order notes in your subscription management page.
