FREE-RANGE MEAT INFORMATION
About our Free-range meat
Green Connect is proud to offer sustainable and ethical pork and lamb
Our pigs were raised on our permaculture farm in Warrawong, we move them around different areas of the farm. They roam through fresh pastures, feast on leftover produce, live in the sunshine, roll in the mud, and act like animals.
Our animals play an important role on the farm by helping us to manage weeds and pests, regenerate the soil with their manure, and reduce food waste.
They also help us to better utilise our marginal land, diversity our income, create more jobs for former refugees and young people, and teach visitors to our farm about how we can farm animals in more ethical and integrated ways.

We pride ourselves on the quality of meat we produce.
Multiple times year, we sell free-range pork and free-range pork and lamb packs to the community. These packs include a variety of cuts so that no parts of our animals go to waste.
This year, we are partnering with the talented team at Meadow Street Meats in Tarrawanna. Caine (the butcher) will create 5kg & 10kg packs of different cuts so that every customers receives a variety of delicious meat to enjoy.
What cuts come in the mixed packs?
Our free-range meat pack will include the following variety of cuts:
- 10kg Pork Pack: Pork roast (shoulder and/or neck), spareribs, pork belly, pork chops, pork shank, pork sausage, and minced pork.
- 5kg Pork Pack: Pork roast (shoulder or neck), pork chops, minced pork, pork sausage.
- 10kg Pork and Lamb Pack:

LAMB: shoulder (~1.5kg) and chops, ribs, and/or cutlets (~1.25kg) OR leg (~1.5kg), chops, ribs, and/or cutlets (~1.25kg)
Can I choose what I get?
Unfortunately not. Our animals have only so many sections that can be made into specific cuts. We want to make sure that the whole animal is appreciated and nothing is wasted so we only sell mixed packs. It also means the different cuts can be shared between all of our customers.
HOWEVER, we are testing out allowing customers to exclude up to 1 cut and tell us what cuts they would prefer. We will do our best to accommodate preferences based on what we have available.
Write the cut you'd like any preferred cuts in the Order Notes field on the check out page.
Where and when can meat be picked up from?
Our next free-range pork will be available for pick-up between Tuesday 7 May to Thursday 9 May from Meadow Street Meats, Shop 2/104 Meadow St, Tarrawanna.
Meat can also be frozen for later pick-up, if needed.
Delivery between Coledale and Kiama may be possible for a fee. To enquire about this option, get in touch with our Fair Food Coordinator at fairfood@green-connect.com.auand we’ll see what we can do.
Pricing & Pre-Payment
How is the meat priced?
In setting the price for our free range pork and lamb, we considered both the market value for similar products as well as what it actually costs us to ethically and sustainably raise or pigs and lambs. As a not-for-profit social enterprise dedicated to growing fair food and creating jobs for former refugees and young people, we are committed to paying our staff award wages for the hours they work.
Do I need to pre-pay?
Yes. Prepayment is needed for us to reserve your order for you.
Mixed Pack FAQs
How big is a 10kg pack?
A 10kg pack fits in 25 cubic centimetres – about a third of a freezer compartment of an average household fridge-freezer.
Ham FAQs
How are your hams prepared?
Lachy, the butcher at Cleaver & Co Craft Butchery who prepares all of our meat, will cut the hams, soak them in brine, and send them to the folks at Dorahy Meats in Unanderra for smoking. Customers will then be able to pick them up and enjoy them right away.
That’s about 2 weeks from pig on farm to ham on your plate. You can’t get much fresher than that!
Can I get my ham delivered to my home?
Yes! We are offering free home delivery for hams between 4-7pm on the following dates only:
- Wednesday 6th December, if you live between Wollongong and Austinmer
- Thursday 7th December, if you live between Wollongong and Kiama.
NOTE: Someone MUST be home to receive your delivery and settle the balance owed when your ham weight is known.
The home delivery time doesn't work for me. Where and when can I pick up my ham instead?
Pick-up your ham from the Green Connect Farm in Warrawong from Wednesday December 6th to Friday December 15th, between 8am-3:30pm.
Remember to bring a cool bag to keep the ham cold until you can get it into your fridge.
Is it free-range?
Yes! Our pigs were raised on our permaculture farm in Warrawong, we move them around different areas of the farm so they can feast on leftover fruit, vegetables and plants – which also helps us to cultivate the soil.

Why do I need to pay a deposit?
Because we only raise a small number of animals on our farm and will have a small number of hams available, we are allowing customers to reserve their hams in advance. If there are hams still available in early December, deposits will not be needed then. However, we anticipate that hams will sell-out in advance.
Why do we farm animals at Green Connect Farm?
-
Sustainable and Ethical
There is a growing number of people who follow the diet of an ‘ethical omnivore’: a person who only eats meat that comes from an ethical source.
Our production of animal products is largely a response to a demand from our network to provide meat and eggs that are local (we are still the only meat producer in the Illawarra) and ethically produced.
-
Farm Management
The animals on our farm help us take care of the weeds.
The sheep and goats will munch them down, and the pigs will then come through and chew at their roots, cultivating the soil with their foraging.
The problem weeds get fed to the chickens, turning unwanted weeds into valuable fertiliser.
Animals also provide valuable nutrients for the soil with their manure.
-
Connecting humans to other animals
Whether we eat meat, or we don’t, one thing I think we can all agree on is that our relationship with livestock needs a radical overhaul. The way that the modern food system isolated humans from the animals that provide their protein has allowed people to become ignorant of some truly horrible treatment of animals.
We believe that providing a connection between people and animals on our farm will encourage people to think more deeply about where their food comes from and how society treats animals.
